Gestational Surrogacy
Although the need for gestational surrogacy is rare, there are still couples that require the need for a gestational carrier. A gestational carrier may be the only chance for a couple to have their own genetic child when the female partner is unable or capable of carrying a pregnancy on her own.
Those requiring a gestational carrier include:
1. Rokitanskys syndrome (congenital absence of a uterus)
2. Severely congenitally abnormal uterus
3. Previous hysterectomy
4. Medical conditions with an absolute contraindication for pregnancy
5. Unexplained recurrent abortion
6. Unexplained failed implantation and previous reproductive procedures with demonstrated good quality blastocysts
Even though there are difficult ethical dilemmas associated with gestational surrogacy, the Markham Fertility Centre believes that a couple should have the reproductive option of a gestational carrier to carry their child if medically indicated. If done correctly, with proper medical, psychological testing and counseling, gestational surrogacy is extremely rewarding for both couple and the carrier.
